Process

Once I had created our storylines we then looked into initial design ideas, shapes and patterns, from this we then put our hand drawn design into Fusion 360, to design it three dimensionally. From this we would use the software Chitubox to slice our designs before they were put through the resin prints. Our aim in the project was to create a rough model that we could cast and turn into weapons moulds. In the end we ended up with three separate weapons moulds; one for the hilt, one for the blade, and one for the scabbard. By the end of the project we would have one dagger with a cast resin blade, one with a metal blade and a full scabbard.

Arthur Pendragon's Carnwennan Dagger

Prop Making Skills Project

This Project was a skills building workshop. We were given the objective of designing a dagger for Arthur Pendragon. The dagger, Carnwennan, was given to Arthur before he was eventually given Caledfwich in the original tale. We were to design 6th century dagger and scabbard, for a Fantasy TV series. We could take the story in whatever direction we pleased.

In my story of Arthur Pendragon, he is given Carnwennan by Cernunnos, 'the god of all things', the dagger is given to Arthur when he is 13, and it was the first promise of three, Carnwennan was a promise to look over the lands of Wales, over its woodlands and protect it from invasion, the god would give him a two years to prove himself worthy of the gift of the dagger,  once he had proven himself he would be given Rhongomyniad, but with the promise that he would look after the balance of animals, treating them with respect and compassion. He would have three years to prove his loyalty before being visited by Cernunnos for the final time, if worthy he would be given Caledfwlch, (meaning cleaving what is hard), Cernunnos explains why he has given the weapon such a name, he explains how in life Arthur would face many battles where the right decision would not always be the easy one, and that the position of power he would be given would lead him to make difficult decisions. As the line between good and evil is not always an obvious one.
